Ensuite
Refresh

A strategic cosmetic refresh — not a full gut — that transformed a tired ensuite in eight days by swapping fixtures, re-tiling the shower, and updating every visible surface without touching the existing layout.

Overview

Giving a Brantford ensuite a second life without the cost or timeline of a full renovation.

Not every bathroom needs to be taken down to the studs. This Brantford ensuite was structurally sound — the plumbing worked, the shower base was in good condition, and the layout made sense for the room. What didn't work was everything you could see: dated almond fixtures, a chipped laminate vanity, grout lines that had permanently discoloured, and a builder-grade mirror that had started de-silvering around the edges.

The homeowners wanted a meaningful transformation on a realistic budget. We proposed a targeted cosmetic refresh: keep the existing footprint and shower base, re-tile the shower walls over new cement board, swap the vanity for a same-footprint unit in a warmer finish, upgrade every fixture and accessory to brushed nickel, install new lighting and a proper framed mirror, and repaint the entire room. The goal was to make it feel like a different bathroom without the cost or disruption of moving a single drain line.

Approach

Surgical upgrades — new cement board, warm taupe tile, and a complete fixture swap in just over a week.

We started by stripping the existing shower wall tile and the deteriorated greenboard behind it. Fresh cement board went up, taped and waterproofed at every seam with RedGard before a single tile was set. The new shower tile is a warm taupe subway in a stacked bond pattern — clean, classic, and forgiving on a wall that wasn't perfectly plumb. We ran it from the shower base to the ceiling line, finishing with a brushed nickel Schluter edge trim that gives the tile a crisp termination point without bullnose pieces.

The old vanity came out in one piece and the new unit — a 36-inch soft-close shaker style in antique white with a cultured marble top — dropped right into the same supply and drain locations. We swapped the faucet, towel bars, toilet paper holder, and robe hook to a matching brushed nickel suite, installed a framed rectangular mirror with integrated LED perimeter lighting, and replaced the dated Hollywood bar light with a three-light sconce in the same finish. Walls and trim got two coats of a warm cream eggshell, and new baseboard was mitre-cut and caulked to clean up the floor line.

Result

A warm, updated ensuite that looks completely new — finished in eight days start to finish.

The turnaround surprised even the homeowners. From demo on day one to final touch-ups on day eight, the ensuite went from a bathroom they'd been avoiding to the one they actually prefer using over the main bath. The warm taupe and cream palette feels current without being trendy, the brushed nickel hardware ties every element together, and the new LED-lit mirror alone changed the way the room feels after dark. Most importantly, the budget came in at roughly 40% of what a full gut would have cost — proving that when the bones are good, a smart refresh can deliver most of the impact at a fraction of the price.
