Main Floor
Hardwood

Wide-plank European white oak hardwood across every room of a busy family main floor.

Overview

Out with the carpet and vinyl — in with 1,200 square feet of continuous white oak.

The homeowners had lived with mismatched flooring for years: builder-grade carpet in the living and dining rooms, peeling sheet vinyl in the kitchen, and worn laminate down the hallway. They wanted one material, one colour, one unbroken plane from the front door to the back patio.

We specified a 7½-inch-wide engineered European white oak with a natural matte finish — warm enough to feel inviting, neutral enough to work with their existing stone countertops and painted cabinetry. The wire-brushed texture hides everyday wear while keeping the grain character front and centre.

Preparation

Three layers of old flooring came up before a single plank went down.

Demolition revealed carpet underpad glued to plywood, two generations of vinyl adhesive in the kitchen, and a subfloor that dipped almost a quarter-inch near the load-bearing wall. We scraped every surface clean, applied self-levelling compound where needed, and confirmed moisture readings were within spec before laying the vapour barrier and acoustic underlayment.

Six doorway transitions — including a tricky 45-degree angle at the hall closet — were templated in advance so the T-mouldings and reducers would align perfectly with the door casings. Every threshold was undercut to let the hardwood slide beneath the trim for a seamless look.

Result

Five days from bare subfloor to furniture back in place.

The finished main floor reads as a single, uninterrupted surface — consistent plank direction, tight joints, and colour-matched quarter-round at every wall. The homeowners noticed an immediate difference in how light moves through the space: the matte oak reflects just enough warmth without the glare of a high-gloss finish. Furniture was back in position on the fifth afternoon, and the family was walking on their new floor that same evening.
