This Hamilton homeowner wanted the warmth of real walnut everywhere the family gathers — an 800-square-foot open-concept living room that flows directly into a centre-hall staircase. The challenge was making the floor and the stairs feel like one continuous element, not two separate installations bolted together.

We selected a 6-inch engineered American walnut with a satin finish that brings out the species' natural chocolate-and-caramel grain. The same plank stock was used for the stair treads, so colour and texture match perfectly from the ground floor to the upper hallway.

Before new material could go down, we pulled up 30-year-old carpet and found original vinyl tile underneath. An independent lab confirmed no asbestos — clearing us to proceed with full demolition. The plywood subfloor was in good shape but needed screw-tightening and a light sanding pass to eliminate squeaks.

Each of the 14 stair treads was individually measured, cut, and test-fitted before adhesive and fasteners went in. The riser panels were replaced with matching walnut veneer, and a bull-nose stair nosing was milled to the same radius as the tread edge — giving each step a smooth, finished profile that's comfortable underfoot and visually seamless.

The finished space has the deep, quiet richness that only real walnut delivers. Light from the south-facing windows draws out the grain's natural variation — no two planks look the same, but the satin sheen ties everything together. The staircase, once hidden under threadbare carpet, is now a visual centrepiece that connects both storeys with the same warm palette. The homeowner's only regret: not doing it sooner.
