Guest Bath
Refresh
A smart, budget-conscious guest bathroom conversion in an Oakville bungalow.
Overview
Converting a tired tub-shower combo into a clean, accessible walk-in shower — without breaking the budget.
The homeowners of this Oakville bungalow needed their only guest bathroom updated before aging parents began visiting more regularly. The existing space featured a yellowed fibreglass tub-shower insert, a particle-board vanity that was swelling at the base, and a surface-mounted medicine cabinet that jutted awkwardly into the 65-square-foot room.
The goal was straightforward: remove the tub, install a curbless walk-in shower for accessibility, replace the vanity and storage, and make the whole room feel bright and modern — all within a disciplined material budget that prioritized longevity over luxury.
Approach
White matte tile, natural oak, and a zero-threshold entry — Scandinavian simplicity with purpose.
We removed the fibreglass insert and reframed the alcove to accept a curbless shower pan with a pre-sloped Kerdi shower tray and point drain. The walls received 4×12-inch white matte ceramic tile laid in a stacked vertical bond with light grey unsanded grout, running from floor to ceiling on all three shower walls for a clean, linear look that visually stretches the compact space.
A 30-inch natural white-oak vanity with a ceramic integrated basin was paired with a chrome single-hole faucet. Above it, we cut into the wall cavity to install a 16×24-inch recessed medicine cabinet with a mirrored door, reclaiming the three inches the old surface-mount unit had stolen from the room. New 12×24-inch matte white floor tiles were laid across the entire bathroom with a consistent zero-threshold transition into the shower.
Result
A guest bath that feels generous, bright, and completely barrier-free.
The finished bathroom is unrecognizable from the original. The curbless shower entry allows effortless access for guests of any mobility, while the stacked white tile and light grey grout create a calm rhythm across every wall. The natural oak vanity adds just enough warmth to keep the room from feeling clinical, and the recessed medicine cabinet provides storage without cluttering the sightline. Chrome fixtures, a frameless glass splash panel, and a new 110-CFM exhaust fan with LED light round out a renovation that proves smart material choices can deliver a premium result on a practical budget.
